I was hiking recently at a neighboring State Park with my husband. It was our first time there; we didn’t have a very detailed map and we weren’t familiar with the trails so it was truly an adventure! It was fun tuning in and checking with each other at every fork in the path and really deciding in the moment which way to go…being completely open to what was beyond the next rock or bend in the path.

As we walked the paths, I really took notice of the trees, the leaves, the vines growing up the trees and along the ground, the rocks…all of it. And I noticed something that I have seen many times before (and I’m sure you have, too) but that day what I saw meant something new to me.

I noticed the imperfections in the trees: not all branches had leaves, some trees had burls and even some trees had more than 50% of their trunk missing – most of the trunk was missing!

As a side note (I just learned this writing this article): A burl (American English) or bur or burr (used in all non-US English speaking countries) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds.” (from Wikipedia)

What was amazing to me was that the trees that had burls and the trees that had hollow trunks STILL HAD LEAVES! These leaves offered comforting shade to us on our adventurous hike.

The trees with their imperfections remind me of people…all people…you and me…with our imperfections we are enough. We are important. We add value…as we are…right now. I have proof!
