What do YOU do when you feel grumpy?
Sometimes stewing in grumpiness for a while can feel like the thing to do, although those around you might feel differently.
But even when you’re ready to shift out of a grumpy mood, it’s not always easy to do!
Everyone can benefit from a mood enhancer now and then. And here’s one you don’t need a prescription for:
==> Make a list of 10 reasons you are grateful right now <==
Writing down reasons you feel appreciative each day is the quickest, easiest (and totally free!) way to up-the-ante on your joy. And since where attention goes energy flows, doing this will open yourself up to even MORE reasons to be grateful.
To support this being easy, allowing yourself to get started right away, a gratitude journal doesn’t have to be fancy. In fact, writing what you are grateful for can be done on a cocktail napkin or by typing out a quick list on your phone.
That said, in the spirit of intentionally creating a life you love, you might consider treating yourself to a new notebook or journal with a cover, and perhaps pictures and quotes that speak to you. My recommendation is keeping your gratitude journal someplace handy and writing it it ideally the same time every day – easily creating a new habit for yourself. I suggest keeping your journal by your bed with a favorite pen – and jot down at least 3, but ideally 10, reasons that you feel grateful about your day.
Research has shown that people who practice gratitude are healthier, happier, sleep better, exercise more, have less anxiety and depression, have lower blood pressure, stronger relationships, and improved overall well-being.
In one study, after writing just 3 things they felt grateful for every night for one week, participants were 2% happier than before – and their happiness continued to increase to 5% at one month, and 9% at six months. All from one week of gratitude journaling!
Just as we create and nurture relationships with those in our life and with our dreams (read this archived article on deepening your relationship with your dream), it is so valuable to create a relationship with your gratitude journal.
If you’re NOT pausing and reflecting on what you are grateful for each day, you will be missing out on the awareness of what’s going well in your life.
By NOT devoting time to bring awareness to what you’re grateful for, will leave you feeling like nothing that you do really matters. You’ll just be on to the next thing and missing those inspired action steps and delightful moments that support you in making your dream a reality. You could miss recognizing gifts and nudges from the Universe telling you that you are on the right track.
Rather than all that, take pause and make note of what you are grateful for. It’s a powerful intentional mind shift and, frankly, a game changer for your life.
It’s quick and easy to shift your perception of your current situation: simply note your gratitude. Doing so makes it so much easier to SEE both what you are intentionally creating and all that you current have to be grateful for!
Experiment with it for a week and then then ask yourself:
- How is the experience of focusing on what I am grateful for going?
- How has it impacted the way I’ve experienced my day?
- What outcomes have been created as a result of my being grateful?
- Include in your gratitude journal what you appreciate about this new habit.
