Breaking bullshit rules (“brules”) can be positively life-changing.
If you are feeling like a bird in a cage, caught in a pickle, or cast in a role that, in your heart of hearts, you know is wrong for you and that – if you don’t change – will always feel confining or contrived … you are more than likely managing increasing amounts of restlessness, frustration, and dissatisfaction.
If, despite that, you haven’t yet made the leap (be it career move, relationship, living situation, or creative calling) you’re not alone. Making the leap out of what’s familiar, predictable, and known can be really, really scary.
It’s why many resign themselves to simply staying put.
It’s also why The Brules of Life: 15 bullshit rules to break for a no-vacation-needed life is a MUST READ.
Here are 3 reasons breaking bullshit rules is harder than you might think:
1) Not ALL rules are made to be broken.
While not all rules are made to be broken, some are total BS. But spotting and discerning which is which requires a very keen eye – if you can spot them at all, since many of the biggest culprits hide in plain sight. I have personally broken every “brule” in the book – quite literally! After more than 17 years coaching others to rethink conventions and implement strategies for more joy, freedom, and success on your own terms … I have had a firsthand and front row seat to the power and impact of intentional brule-breaking. It’s seriously powerful stuff!
2) Distorted ideas tend to perpetuate themselves.
This makes myth-busting especially tricky. When paired with everyday behavior patterns (read: habits and social norms), distorted ideas can become firmly established beliefs, despite however false the premise they are rooted in is. The result can be autopilot decisions, actions that undermine joy, perpetuate misunderstanding, inhibit innovation, and lead to missed opportunities. No bueno.
3) And the kicker is, both have consequences.
The cost of NOT following some rules can be profoundly and cumulatively detrimental, both to you and others. And, the cost of blindly *following* other rules can be profoundly and cumulatively detrimental, both to you and others. This creates an added layer of complexity and confusion when determining what’s what.
But, great news! I’ve done the hard work for you! Rather than trying to sort through what’s what, what to break, what not to break, the cost of each, AND what to do about it … I have done the work for you.
