Is fear holding you back from achieving your dreams?

Is fear holding you back from achieving your dreams?

“There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say … “Yes, I’ve got dreams.” Then they put the box away and bring it out once in a while to look in it, and yep, they’re still there.” ~ Erma Bombeck

Fear does NOT want you to read this … certainly not to the end!

Pull up a chair because I’m about to reveal it’s best kept secret, and next time fear shows itself and threatens to de-rail your dreams, you will be prepared for it’s savvy powers of persuasion.

Fear is too often victorious.

It “wins” because many would sooner share their worst fear with the mailman before they share what they dream of with a member of their family. Dreams are often thought to be private, often under lock and key, and showing up at the starting line can feel risky. Most people opt to keep them a secret.

Fear encourages this. Often, all it takes is a few words and you cry uncle.

“Be realistic.”
“That’s impossible.”
“You’ll never succeed.”
“Be reasonable … I mean, really.”
“Who do you think you ARE?”
“Don’t set your sights too high.”

“Why rock the boat?”
“Imagine what so-and-so will say…”
“Things are good enough.”
“What? You don’t have enough (fill in the blank) for that.”
The list goes on…

Any one of these can have you throwing in the towel and surrendering to your repetitive reality of the familiar, and putting those dreams back into their box like that nice pair of shoes that seemed like a good idea at the time but that you never wear.

Not okay. It hurts your life. It hurts your legacy. It hurts your happiness. And it stunts your potential.

There’s a better way.

There is a wiser, braver, bolder part of YOU that believes it’s possible and every once in a while you get a glimpse of this higher truth.  Until, fear kicks into overdrive … and your dreams get put up on that hard to reach shelf to collect more dust.

Fear is masterful at scaring you right back into your “safe zone” of “good enough”, or worse, “comfortable misery.”

If the first few statements don’t do the trick in getting you to resign yourself to “reality”, fear has a Plan B. Waiting in the wings, it’ll serve up an abundance of so-called “evidence”:

  • A history lesson about times you didn’t succeed or felt embarrassed.
  • Probabilities as if they predict your certain future.
  • Piercing reminders about the expectations of others, all the “shoulds”, rules, and social norms.
  • It’ll dredge up that story about that time when you did that thing (you know the thing)… and why you should play it “safe”, anything to avoid something like that happening again!

Oh yes, fear can have you paralyzed in no time, tricking you into thinking it’s on your side as has your best interest at heart.

Yet, just ‘cuz it’s persuasive and persistent, doesn’t mean it’s True!

Rather than run for a broom to sweep it back under the rug, what’s SO critical to understand is that your dream becomes possible the moment you decide it is. (Yes, you really ARE that powerful.)

If you’ve mistakenly filed your dreams under “impossible”, don’t worry, you can re-file them.

And while it may feel like you’ll need to make HUGE changes and taking BIG scary leaps, know that taking the right small steps are the key.)

Here’s what fear WON’T tell you:

More than anything, it wants to KEEP you from seeing the cost of NOT going for it.

It doesn’t want you to know what you’re missing.  It doesn’t want you to know the price you’re paying for not prioritizing your dreams. It doesn’t want you to know the impact of putting off its fulfillment and delaying your heart’s deepest desires.

Consider: What is the cost – and the RISK – of always wondering? What is the cost, and the risk, of waiting another 6 months? Year? Another 5 years? 10 years?

If you wait another 6 months, that means another 6 months living a life that doesn’t fit you. It means feeling stuck in the routines. It means feeling frustrated and disgruntled every single day. It means feeling disconnected from the truth of who you are meant to be. Feeling that you could have done so much more.  That feeling that you could have lived more! Feeling that discontent everyday for the next x number of months or years.

Can you afford THAT?!?

Fear fears THIS question most of all, because it knows the answer is NO.

If you’re ready and you do not want to pay that price … here are two simple ways to get started today:

Yay.  You’re on your way.  Fear’s got nothing on you.

A Love Note From Your Deepest Desires

Take a quiet moment. Pause, for juuuust a quick moment, now, and take a few breaths. Connect to that place inside you where your deepest dreams and desires reside, where your imagination speaks. Have a peek. Have a listen.

Journey in and lock eyes for a single delicious moment with a longing that is palpable within you. It’s there. It’s always there, waiting for you to pay attention. The real dreams don’t go away. They wait.

Hold in your mind’s eye a vision of what makes your heart skip a beat and turns up the brightness on the light from within. Set aside needing to know HOW to make it happen, for now. Resist “the how hole”. Just let yourself see it, know it, and want it. Remind yourself that within our vast Universe of Possibility, you couldn’t even dream your dream if it was utterly impossible. Believe in it, even and especially if you have no freakin’ clue how to make it so.

Whenever you choose, you can go right back to being skeptical and jaded and overwhelmed. But, first, like a sexy soul who catches your eye from across a room, for a sliiiiight moment longer than is comfortable, hold your gaze with what you want. Let it know that you see it – that you know it’s there, here, within you.

Give it a fist bump, or a wink of acknowledgement. Assure it that while it might be a secret to others, it is no secret to you. Let it know that its whispers aren’t falling on deaf ears. Thank it for all the ways it nudges you to grow and realize the truth of what you’re capable of. Honor it for challenging you to be a bigger bolder full-expression version of yourself. Give a wisdom-filled nod, with a certain knowing that dream realization is really about self-actualization.

If the grandeur of your boundless potential makes you blush, then blush. And breath. And keep imagining the possibilities. And keep visiting this place, again and again, because it’s always available and it’s always delighted and eager to connect with YOU. Give it love. The more love you give it, the better. Give it because you don’t want it to feel neglected. And give it because, when you do, your life gets easier and more joy-filled. Remind yourself that it’s okay for life to be easier and a whole lot more fun.

Good job. Ok, you can go back to whatever you were doing now. Or, if you’d like to journey further into this realm with personalized support and dream-propelling jet fuel, then you and I really should chat. If you can dream it, I can coach it. www.sessionwithTara.com

No Marketing Monkeyshine

What have YOU been dreaming about lately?

As of late, I’ve been working on a dream project of my own which I’ll be telling you about soon. (I’m a lifelong student of my own dreamwork.) I really can’t wait to reveal more!

Soon. But first things first:

A few months ago, I shared about the launch of my ground-breaking, 6-month, *private support included* Dream Acceleration Program™ 2.0 — All for a stunningly affordable price. There’s been a great response to the program. With very little marketing, the word spread thanks in large part to word-of-mouth and referrals from clients and colleagues alike.

And as of today, we’ve got 13 open spots available.

Now, while old school marketing would just make up a number, I assure you there’s no “marketing monkeyshine” happening here. (Credit to a sassy, southern friend of mine for introducing me to this phrase.)kid-monkey

Please hear me: I’m not just “opening up 5 slots in my calendar…” [eye roll] My team and I have assessed the legit space we have available in the calendar, and because there’s so much 1-to-1 personalized support sewn into the fabric of this program, the woman-hours available are limited. Real talk.

So, as much as I *KNOW* the good that this program will do for your life, for life – and the sooner you start the sooner you’ll know what I’m talking about – my team and I have identified what we can handle and when the spaces are full they’re full.

Something I’ve consistently heard from folks joining the program is how unique it is to find a comprehensive and affordable coaching program, with elements of self-study but that also has tons of 1-to-1 customized support built in. I designed it this way very intentionally, because it’s the magic mix that keeps people motivated, engaged, on track, and in full implementation of all the juicy content.

So, please do visit www.dreamaccelerationprogram.com to learn The Dream Acceleration Program™ 2.0 details and get ready to create YOUR own I-can’t-wait-to-get-up-and-out-of-bed-in-the-morning life.

An Unstructured Time Experiment

unstructured timeI am in month #2 of an Unstructured Time Experiment … a new schedule that limits my availability for client sessions to three weeks per month in order to allow me one week per month of unstructured time. Not time “off” per se … I work, but with an I-can-do-what-I-want-when-I-want-where-I-want-with-who-I-want-and-not-need-to-watch-the-clock approach.

There’s a gradual transition underway before this new schedule will be in full effect.  To honor my agreements with those who were scheduled prior to my “new” schedule kicking in to gear, I still have a few client sessions during my Unstructured Week – but only one day during the week, is this the case.

When the idea was first “seeded” and I started to consider putting this into place … I had *ALL KINDS* of resistance rise to the surface!  All kinds of “not enough” stories and who-do-you-think-you-are questions.

Can you afford it, Tara? I mean, really … Who are YOU to decide it’s ok to be less available for new clients? And if prospective new clients have to wait, sometimes 3-4 weeks for a Dream Discovery session, you’re going to miss the chance to work with them … They’ll go find another coach! They won’t *wait* that long. Pfft!  AND – with a team to pay and your expenses being higher than ever, you really have no business even *thinking* about doing such a thing. Utterly arrogant. It’ll be financial sabotage…. And what will you DO with this time exactly? Follow creative inspiration?!? You’re not sure exactly?? Maybe you’ll organize your office? Go to the gym every day that week? Sit in cafes? Pfft! Sounds like playing hooky to me, Queen Tara. An all around terrible idea!

And on and on it went …

But I figured, what the heck, I’ll give it a few months.  I can always go back to my “old” schedule.

In full transparency, my “client time schedule” over the 10 years I’ve been in biz has changed over time, in phases …

Phase I: Anytime, 7 days a week, as long as I’m not sleeping.

Phase II: Monday – Saturday, as long as I’m not sleeping.

Phase III: M-F, as long as I’m not sleeping.

Phase IV: M-F, 9am-6pm.

Phase V: M-F, 9am-6pm, except Wednesdays which start at 11am.

Phase VI: Monday-Thursday, 9am-6pm, except 11am start on Wednesdays, and Fridays available for VIP Days.

Phase VII: Tuesday – Thursday, with 11am start on Wednesdays, and Fridays available for VIP Days.

And now …

Phase VIII: Tuesday-Thursday, with 11am start on Wednesdays and Fridays available for VIP Days, 3 weeks out of the month….

And so far so good!

I’m really learning how important Unstructured Time is for me.  How it allows for creative ideas and inspiration to bubble up. How sometimes I want to write, and sometimes I want to organize, and sometime I want to collaborate, and sometimes I want to play, and sometimes I want to revamp an old something into a new something, and sometimes I want to be in nature, and sometimes I want to be in a public library or a museum, and sometimes I want to take a nap, and sometimes I want to wake up early, and sometime I want to go to bed late.

Tara
Here are just a few of the results of my two-month Unstructured “Week 4” Time:

  • Revamped and restructured an old program into a new and up-leveled more streamlined version that better serves my clients and my team.
  • Followed an in-the-shower inspiration … connected with a colleague and pitched a collaboration idea and, after just a 1-hour “on fire” phone call, wheels are now in motion for a very fun “on the stage” event that we foresee will be duplicated, city after city…
  • Reflected and reviewed how I’m spending my time and as a result have reached out and started interviewing to hire a new Create Your Life! team member to take a time-consuming task off my plate.
  • I had an idea for a brand new business all together and conversation is underway with an interested partner.
  • The closet in my bedroom is organized like never before which makes getting dressed everyday a delight.
  • Plans for a dream trip is in the works.
  • Hot baths in the middle of day, because I can. (And with more frequent gym-time, what used to be a luxury feels more like a need.)
  • Leisurely lunch dates.
  • Long walks with my pup….

And, for the record, NONE of my fears have proven true. Revenue has gone up, not down. I’ve even started to wonder what Phases 9 & 10 might look like!

Thanks for reading. I felt like sharing. And I had the time to do so.

I’d love to hear from you … What does reading this inspire for YOU?

My hope is that you too might look at new ways to schedule your time, allowing for more Unstructured Time and the emergence of a new kind of productivity in your life and your work.

Carpe diem.

May your dreams always inspire more than they intimidate,
