The difference between surviving and thriving

The difference between surviving and thriving

One key is to BECOME an embodiment of the person who LIVES your dreams, who HAS your dreams, who knows it’s certain and steps into that, day after day.

You must ‘self actualize.’

What do I mean by self-actualization?

Self-actualization is not an arrival. It’s not a fixed point. It is not a place at all. It’s an expression. It’s an evolutionary unfolding. A process of not only becoming, but creating your life to reflect that becoming.

The fullness and manifestation of self-actualization can be measured by how much of your life mirrors the magnificent, embodied, unapologetic, expression of YOU that you have become.

Your life is either full of evidence of a high degree of self-actualization, or it is full of evidence of a high degree of self-abandonment. This is a spectrum that leaves little room for gray because your emotional guidance will tell you clearly which one it is.

While not a fixed arrival point, self-actualization will bring countless savory moments when you kick back, drink in your life, and say to yourself, “f*ck yes.”

“This is MY life and I adore living it. I am so incredibly proud of everything I’ve created and how I’ve grown and what I’ve learned in order to get HERE. And now, here I am. I am here. Here is good, and luscious and I love it. I am SAVORING this delicious waking moment … because it is beautiful. Not perfect, mind you, but utterly aligned nonetheless. Beautiful in its unique-to-me expression, and in this, I also acknowledge my own beauty and imperfect perfection. Gratitude for this one incredible life fills my soul, created as only I could, as the one and only me. This life is so on point and I am lit from within about it, while also excited and inspired about all that’s in process and all that I’m creating next because I know that, it too, will only heighten this expression, this beingness, catching up with the latest parts of me that are surfacing and igniting the next levels of my expression. And should I die today, I will do so knowing I died happy, delighted, and inspired.”

When you look at your life and see the many many ways it reflects the beauty and truth of who you are … that’s your evidence of self-actualization .

Nothing is more gratifying.

It’s the kind of joy that fills you up, that lights you from within.

In contrast to this, when you look at your life and think “no, this isn’t right’ ‘I feel trapped’ ‘this isn’t the real me’ ‘I don’t want to do it this way’ ‘how did I get here and how do I get out’ ‘this doesn’t align’ ‘this isn’t who I am’ ‘this isn’t it for me’ ‘‘where the heck is the I in this life I have?’ ‘how do I get where I’m meant to be’ ‘I wish someone would save me’ ‘I’m so tired’ ‘my soul aches’ ‘when does my life rise up to greet me and welcome me home, to myself?’… then (obviously) this is not ideal. It absolutely sucks. I know because I’ve been there. To stay, to keep going, to keep doing the same things in the same ways for another day, perhaps with the same people, is one more day of self-abandonment.

^ This is the polar opposite of self-actualization.

Spoiler alert! Your life will always be lagging a bit behind your becoming. Since as long as you’re alive you’re creating, there’s always more to recalibrate and adjust to best reflect what you’ve discovered or revealed or uncovered about your beingness. There’s simply no way around this.

BUT – when you’re in a space of confident self-actualization even the lag time feels welcomed, glorious even, because the process of creation is an art form that you enjoy.

You know that arrival is a myth, and that evolution is ongoing.

You embrace and delight in the unfolding and trust the outcomes completely.

You are not suffering or surviving in the interim.

You are engaged and inspired.

You are alive in the ALL of it.

You are thriving.

There is always more to discover, create, and be. As you seek on a quest for a meaningful, joyful, impactful, satisfying, successful life (one that you aren’t aching to escape to Bora Bora about) … it’s an expanding spiral upward, a helix of becoming who you are meant to be, self-actualizing and living a life that is so aligned and joyful it IS the expression of the WHO that you’ve become. And as you become that WHO even more, new levels of desire are revealed and deepened, and expansion and new possibilities become possible for you.

What stopped you this year?

What stopped you this year?

Naysayers have an unfortunate amount of influence over whether you live your dreams, for this one reason: Your own self-doubt.

How often do we do something, not do something, or change how we do something because of what people say? Or even what we THINK people will say?

Deferring to others is a symptom of innate self-doubt. And when the people you’re deferring to are naysayers or people who don’t want to see you make any changes, it can be the nail in the coffin for your dreams.

I know it may sound like I’m being overly dramatic. But unfortunately, in many cases, this is exactly what happens.

When people don’t receive approval or support from others about their dreams, it’s often at this very moment that their dreams die on the vine.

What can make naysayer navigation doubly hard is when it comes from the voices close to us.

This is why – if you want to not just dream, but LIVE those dreams – building self-trust and self-mastery is imperative.

Because when we fully trust OURSELVES and our own vision and desires, and when we trust ourselves to ACT and to BE, the words and opinions of naysayers, don’t stop us. We live our dreams.

It’s also why it’s so important to have a naysayer navigation plan so that the dreams in your heart don’t wither up like a raisin in the sun.

Look, if this stuff was easy everyone would do it!

The key is to align yourself with the right support while you grow in your ability to trust yourself. When you do this, you are strengthening the very foundation that your dreams and goals are built on: YOU.

While doubts and questions are normal and natural, most people stop right there.

But – this is 100% preventable. With the right support in your corner, this won’t happen because when doubts pop up, we bust through them right away. As we face each doubt and obstacle together, you’ll gain a growing sense of bravery, confidence, and self-trust. When old habits and default ways of thinking start sneaking their way back in and seem so real, together we will shine a light of TRUTH on those doubts and naysayer opinions and recognize and reconnect to what YOU want so you can step back into how you can create it.

It’s hard, sometimes even impossible, to do it alone.

Sticking with it, investing in support, and staying with the process are what is going to really set you apart .

Think you know me?

Think you know me?

I’ve grown, and though you may think you know what I’m going to say, allow me to (re)introduce myself.

First, the basics:

I’m a life coach, digital nomad, bestselling author, professional speaker, made-up word lover, amateur salsa dancer, and blanket hog who often wonders out loud if I should call myself a Self-Actualization Coach because my true north and the driving force behind all my work is the belief that dream acceleration is REALLY about self-actualization.

Here’s a bit of my story and why I’ve been musing on such things:

On a good day, I felt restless. On a bad day, I felt like a caged animal.

Exasperated, I came home from work to my dark, musty, basement apartment – a glaring reminder that I was not just figuratively, but literally, underground. Drowning in student loan debt, I rarely answered my phone because collection agencies were calling me daily. Trying to find my way in the world wasn’t easy. All the emotional and practical baggage of difficult family dynamics and estrangement seemed to all be hitting me at once. Much of it not my fault, I felt like a victim of circumstances who was dealt an unfortunate hand. I felt profoundly alone in my struggles.

The job I begrudgingly got at an Ivy League university to establish some stability, looked good on paper, but my soul was dying, a little more every day. If I had to sit through one more hour-long meeting that could have been communicated by an email, I was going to lose it! Things were done in inefficient ways for no reason other than it’s the way they’d always done it. This felt archaic to me, but rethinking conventions wasn’t welcomed or encouraged. Waiting for that clock on the wall to say 5:00 felt like an insult to my personal integrity and pride, not to mention that I had finished my work hours earlier. The starched button down shirt I wore, because I thought I should, felt like a straight-jacket, a costume that belonged to someone else – but not me.

I knew I couldn’t stay.

While going through the motions on all the things I thought I was supposed to do, I was losing myself. On autopilot, I’d drive to work, or the grocery store, or the gym (when I could get myself to go) feeling more and more disconnected from who I was. I wasn’t challenged. I wasn’t inspired. I felt contained, micro-managed, and caught in status quo games that I didn’t want to play. I felt like I was drowning, and I knew no one was coming to save me.

Underneath my restlessness and frustration, was a growing sense that I was meant for MORE, that this couldn’t possibly be all I was meant to do, be, or have.

I knew I needed to take the reins and reshape my life, to reshape my reality, to figure out how to not live in a basement forever, to create a life that was my own, that reflected the truth of who I was.

It was from that dark musty basement apartment, that I gazed out that teeny-tiny window with a view of the sidewalk and the tires of cars passing by … and I’d dream.

I dreamed of having the freedom to travel when and where I please. I dreamed of having my own location-independent company so that I could work from anywhere. I dreamed of a home with lots of natural light. I dreamed of becoming a bestselling author. I dreamed of wealth on my own terms. I dreamed of finding love. I dreamed of having time and energy for creativity and play. I dreamed of making a positive impact, serving others in meaningful ways that made their life better. I dreamed of being myself without boundaries.

The voice of my soul and seeds of my own self-actualization were surfacing

Naming my dreams felt so powerful. I acknowledged the dreams in my heart and imagined what my life could be – despite having absolutely no idea how to make ANY of it happen at the time.

People said my dreams were impossible, that I should “settle down,” stay at my job, just be more grateful. They were wrong.

Not only have I achieved my “impossible” dreams and the freedom I so craved, I’ve built a business around helping YOU chart your own course, live your dreams, and create the life you think you cannot have. I have coached thousands to go beyond striving, wishing, and “someday-ing,” to experience the true freedom life has to offer. Rethinking conventions and challenging status quo “have tos,” while helping people rediscover themselves and realize what’s possible, has made for a profoundly fulfilling, decades-long career. Looking to the horizon, I am expanding my impact daily, determined to reach millions of people with my writing, coaching, and speaking.

Your dreams, like mine, are fuel on your path to self-actualization.

Regardless of the specifics of what your dreams are, I stand for them as by-products and bonus results of your becoming. Who you become in the process is the real win, and how you grow and stretch into being the person who would have them is the real work. (It’s also where the biggest rewards are found.)

I help you create the life you think you cannot have while becoming the person you are meant to be.

What is the life YOU think you cannot have ? Who do you need to become in order to create it?

Love,
